Cafe and coffee shop name ideas

A cafe’s name is said out loud far more often than it is read: to a friend, over the phone, in a review. The best ones are easy to say, easy to spell after hearing them once, and sound like somewhere you’d happily sit for an hour.

Ways to name a cafe

  1. One word from the counter

A single coffee word is short, warm and easy to remember. It suits a cafe whose coffee is the reason people come.

  2. Name the moment, not the menu

People visit a cafe for a pause in their day as much as for a drink. A name about that moment leaves room to grow the menu later.

  3. Borrow a sense of place

A place in the name sets a mood before anyone walks in, whether it’s your own suburb or somewhere your food and coffee draw on.

  4. Show the craft

If you roast your own beans, say so. A name about the craft tells coffee lovers what kind of cafe you are.

Before you settle on a name

  1. A spelling that sounds the same isn’t a new name

ASIC compares business names by how they sound, so a spelling that sounds like a registered name counts as the same name. Its own example: “Creative@Work” and “Kre8tive at Work”.

  2. Search the business names register

ASIC won’t register a name that is identical or nearly identical to one already registered. It ignores plurals, “the” and spacing when it compares names, and against other business names it also ignores word order and counts names that sound the same as one name.

  3. Look for trade marks

Registering a business name doesn’t give you exclusive rights to it. Only a trade mark does, so search the trade mark register as well.

  4. Settle the domain at the same time

business.gov.au suggests registering a domain that reflects your business name, even before you have a website. If the .com.au you want is already held, its holder may be willing to sell it.
