Check a business name

See whether an Australian business already uses the name, and find a domain to match it.

Free, and you don’t need an account.

How this check works

We search a copy of ASIC’s register of business names for names that are the same as yours or close to it, and every answer gives the date of the copy. Then we look through the names for sale on Dotto for ones in your trade.

Does a clear result mean I can use the name?

Not on its own. ASIC makes the final call when you register, and it treats names as the same even when they differ by plurals, spacing, punctuation or a .com.au on the end. A trade mark or a company name can also stop you using a name, so search IP Australia’s trade marks too.

Where do the results come from?

Business names come from ASIC’s Business Names Dataset on data.gov.au, which ASIC publishes every week under a Creative Commons licence. Dotto isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by ASIC. Names for sale are Dotto’s own listings.

Is the name I type kept?

No. Dotto uses it for the search and doesn’t save or share it, and it never appears in the page’s address.

Can I register my business name here?

No. Business names are registered with ASIC, and ASIC’s guide shows you how.

Why buy a domain instead of registering a new one?

A short, clear .com.au is often already taken. Buying one that fits your trade can give your business a name people remember from the first day.
