Why short matters more in `.com.au` than anywhere else

Every Australian business types .com.au after its name, so seven characters are spent before you begin. A six-letter name gives you a thirteen-character address; a twelve-letter name gives you nineteen, and it starts to strain on the side of a vehicle, in a radio ad, or in the part of a search result Google actually shows.

Short also survives being spoken. carers.com.au can be said once at a counter and typed correctly. A long compound gets spelled out, twice, and still arrives wrong.

There is also a small group of two-character numeric names — 13.com.au, 45.com.au and 50.com.au, each at $45,000. Numbers behave differently from letters: they are unambiguous on the phone but carry no meaning until you give them one.

Four, five or six letters?

Four letters is the scarcest and usually the dearest. There are only a few dozen on the marketplace at any time. Choose this when the name is the brand.

Five letters is where most memorable invented names live — anaxi, yolkd, rashy. Long enough to be pronounceable and distinctive, short enough to stay tidy.

Six letters is the value band, and it is where the real words are. carers, annual, strong are all six. If you want a short name that also means something, six letters is where to look first.

Reading the geographic abbreviations

A few names use Australian shorthand that is worth recognising, because it changes who they are worth something to. bneqld is Brisbane, Queensland. gcqld is Gold Coast, Queensland. sscqld follows the same pattern. These are precise instruments: worth a good deal to a business trading in that place, and worth very little to anyone else. If you are local, they are often the best value on the board.

Before you commit

Check the name against the IP Australia trade mark register before you buy. A domain purchase does not give you rights to a name somebody else has registered as a trade mark, and this is the single most expensive mistake a new buyer can make.

Say it out loud to someone who has not seen it written. If they can spell it back to you, it works. If they ask "is that with a Y?", keep looking.
